| Résumé : | English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is now well established as an important and distinctive part of English Language Teaching. Since the late 1980 s ESP has changed in two very significant respects. Firstly, English for Business Purposes has become an increasingly important, even dominant, area of ESP. Secondly, the work of discourse and genre analysis on the one hand and the results of computer-based analysis on the other provide a fuller understanding of how specific texts, both written and spoken, work. This book provides an update of these major developments in ESP and a summary of where the discipline is now. It is practical and accessible while covering a wide range of both theoretical and methodological topics. It also charts how ESP has been influenced by new ideas in the areas of management training, human resource development, sociology and intercultural training. |

| Mots-clés : | English language Study teaching (Higher) Foreign speakers Rhetoric Academic writing | Résumé : | This book provides a comprehensive overview of the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for teachers. It not only looks at study skills, but also at other central concerns of EAP, such as needs analysis, syllabus and course design, methodology and materials, learning styles, tests and exams, and academic style and genre analysis. In addition to general EAP, the author also considers subject-specific language and the production of teaching materials. Throughout, the author adopts a user-friendly approach in which theoretical considerations are balanced with practical experience. Issues are discussed and illustrated, but readers are also encouraged to form their own opinions by means of stimulating introspect and discuss sections at the end of each chapter. |

| Mots-clés : | Language Study teaching Congresses Multicultural education Drama Ethnology | Résumé : | Language Learning in Intercultural Perspective addresses the ways in which language learning is related to learning about other cultures and to acquiring an ability to communicate across cultural frontiers. It argues that language learners need to develop sensitivity to cultural difference and its impact on communication, and to acquire the skills of discovering and interpreting other cultures, other values, beliefs and behaviours which lie beneath the surface of cross-cultural communication. Contributors show how drama can be used to develop cultural awareness and how learners can acquire ethnographic skills to help them investigate and understand socio-cultural aspects of language which play an important role in second language acquisition |

Areas considered include approaches to learning, motivation, the role of the individual, attribution, mediation, the teaching of thinking, the cognitive demands of tasks and the learning environment.
