Titre : | Selected poems | Type de document : | texte imprimé | Auteurs : | Rudyard Kipling, Auteur | Editeur : | London [England] : Penguin Books | Année de publication : | 1993 | Collection : | Penguin classics | Importance : | 1 vol. (229 p.) | Présentation : | couv. ill. en coul. | Format : | 20 cm | ISBN/ISSN/EAN : | 0-14-018477-5 | Langues : | Anglais | Catégories : | LITTERATURE ET LANGUE ANGLAISE:821 English poetry
| Résumé : | Kipling's reputation as the unofficial Laureate of the British Empire has obscured the true nature of his poetic achievement. Far from being the Establishment figure of popular legend, he was a fiercely independent poet, opposed to the dominant political and literary tendencies of his age. His poems range from exhilarating celebrations of British expansion overseas, through vivid character sketches of soldiers and seamen, to enchanting poems for children, political invective and artistic manifestos. In this selection Kipling's poems are presented in chronological order to reveal the scope and development, as well as the originality, of his work. It opens with Kipling satirizing the British India, and closes with him warning against the rise of Nazi Germany. |

Titre : | Selected stories | Type de document : | texte imprimé | Auteurs : | Rudyard Kipling ; Andrew Rutherford | Editeur : | London [England] : Penguin Books | Année de publication : | 2001 | Importance : | 525 p. | Présentation : | couv. ill. en coul. | Format : | 20 cm | ISBN/ISSN/EAN : | 0-14-118675-5 | Note générale : | Originally published: Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1987. | Langues : | Anglais | Catégories : | LITTERATURE ET LANGUE ANGLAISE:828 English literature
| Index. décimale : | 823.8 | Résumé : | Rudyard Kipling is undoubtedly among the great short story writers in the English language. This collection opens with "The Gate of the Hundred Sorrows," the first story Kipling published as a young journalist in India, and ends with an acknowledged masterpiece, "The Gardener," written 50 years later in the aftermath of the Great War. The stories of the intervening years show an extraordinary range of subject matter and technique. Above all, these stories reveal Kipling's ability to enter imaginatively into the minds of characters whose lives and values were radically different from his own-his willingness, as he himself once said, "to think in another man's skin." |

Titre : | Stories and Poems | Type de document : | texte imprimé | Auteurs : | Rudyard Kipling, Auteur | Editeur : | Oxford [United Kingdom] : Oxford university press | Année de publication : | 2015 | Collection : | Oxford world's classics | Importance : | 1 vol. (699 p.) | Présentation : | couv. ill. en coul. | Format : | 20 cm. | ISBN/ISSN/EAN : | 978-0-19-872343-1 | Langues : | Anglais | Catégories : | LITTERATURE ET LANGUE ANGLAISE:823 English fiction : novel
| Index. décimale : | 823.8 | Résumé : | Rudyard Kipling is a supreme master of the short story in English and a poet of brilliant gifts. His energy and inventiveness poured themselves into every kind of tale, from the bleakest of fables to the richest of comedies, and he illuminated every aspect of human behaviour, of which he was a fascinated (and sometimes appalled) observer. This generous selection of stories and poems, first published in the acclaimed Oxford Authors series, covers the full range of Kipling's career from the youthful volumes that brought him fame as the chronicler of British India, to the bittersweet fruits of age and bereavement in the aftermath of the First World War. It includes stories such as 'The Man who would be King', 'Mrs Bathurst', and 'Mary Postgate', and poems from Barrack-RoomBallads and other collections.
In his introduction and notes Daniel Karlin addresses the controversial political engagement of Kipling's art, and the sources of its imaginative power. |
