| Mots-clés : | culture literature-class school. cultural-class school. cultural-competence cultural-wareness. | Résumé : | The present study aims at assessing both the teachers and FL learners’ cultural awareness and competence when dealing with literary texts. It investigates the place of culture in the literature class. Moreover, it focuses on the inclusion of teaching culture in teaching FLs (English in our case). The organization of the present work is threefold. Chapter one concentrates on clarifying the meaning of culture and its relationship with FL teaching/learning and the literature class. Chapter two includes the presentation of language and culture pedagogy and its development over ages. Also, it describes the various suggested approaches, techniques, and materials for teaching culture. In addition, it highlights the problems encountered when teaching culture (stereotypes and cultural clash) and the role of the teachers to solve them. Furthermore, this chapter analyses the methods of teaching culture in the literature class and the relationship between cultural competence and literary elements. Chapter three is a corpus-based investigation of cultural sides in a literature class. In other words, it provides a description of attended sessions at the university, and which deals with cultural issues in Dubliners, by James Joyce. In addition, the last chapter presents analysis and interpretation of the learners and teachers questionnaires which evaluate their consciousness of cultural features in literary texts. FL learners are not aware of cultural elements conveyed by literary texts, and they lack the cultural competence that may help them understand these foreign features. However, teachers are conscious of the existence of cultural aspects in literary texts in spite of their neglect of teaching culture while teaching FL. This may result from their unfamiliarity with using appropriate approaches, techniques, and materials for teaching culture in their classes, or they may lack enough cultural background of the TL. So, the present study provides some suggestions for further research on the subject.
