Format : 24cm Langues : Anglais Catégories : LITTERATURE ET LANGUE ANGLAISE:828 English literature Mots-clés : bell tolls novel Spanish Civil War Résumé : he novel is set near Segovia, Spain, in 1937 and tells the story of American teacher Robert Jordan, who has joined the antifascist Loyalist army. Jordan has been sent to make contact with a guerrilla band and blow up a bridge to advance a Loyalist offensive. The action takes place during Jordan’s 72 hours at the guerrilla camp. During this period he falls in love with María, who has been raped by fascist soldiers, and befriends the shrewd but cowardly guerrilla leader Pablo and his courageous wife, Pilar. Jordan manages to destroy the bridge; Pablo, Pilar, María, and two other guerrillas escape, but Jordan is injured. Proclaiming his love to María once more, he awaits the fascist troops and certain death.
DETAIL: Set in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, For Whom the Bell Tolls follows the struggles of an American college instructor who has left his job to fight for the Republicans. Robert Jordan has been dispatched from Madrid to lead a band of guerrilleros that operates in a perpetual state of leadership crisis. Pablo, the ostensible head of the group, has lost his robust commitment to the hardships of war and wistfully dreams of living peacefully in the company of his horses. Pilar, Pablo’s superstitious, half-gypsy companion, has kept the group cohesive with her darkly agitated care for both the guerrilleros themselves and the fight that has brought them together. Jordan finds an instant bond with Maria, a young woman who was raped by Fascist soldiers before being taken in by the Republican camp. Jordan feels a creeping ambivalence toward the Republican cause and a more general selfalienation as he wrestles with his own abhorrence of violence. His inability to integrate his belief systems is dramatized through his relationship with Maria, for whom he bears a painfully intense love, although he shuns her while strategizing the risky bridgeblowing mission. Ultimately Jordan is forced to reassess his personal, political, and romantic values as his insistence on a coherent and orderly hierarchy of beliefs and experiences is shattered. For whom the bell tolls [texte imprimé] / Ernest Hemingway, Auteur . - Beirut (Liban) : Librairie du Liban Publishers, 1988 . - 413p : ill.,couv. ; 24cm.

Titre : The Letters of Ernest Hemingway : 1923-1925 Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ernest Hemingway, Auteur ; Sandra Spanier, Auteur Editeur : Cambridge [United Kingdom] : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2013 Importance : 604 p. Format : 22.8 x 15.2 x 3.6 centimetres (0.69 kg) ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-89734-1 Langues : Anglais Mots-clés : Ernest Hemingway Letters. Résumé : The Letters of Ernest Hemingway documents the life and creative development of a gifted artist and outsized personality whose work would both reflect and transform his times. Volume 2 (1923-1925) illuminates Hemingway's literary apprenticeship in the legendary milieu of expatriate Paris in the 1920s. We witness the development of his friendships with the likes of Sylvia Beach, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos. Striving to 'make it new', he emerges from the tutelage of Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein to forge a new style, gaining recognition as one of the most formidable talents of his generation. In this period, Hemingway publishes his first three books, including In Our Time (1925), and discovers a lifelong passion for Spain and the bullfight, quickly transforming his experiences into fiction as The Sun Also Rises (1926). The volume features many previously unpublished letters and a humorous sketch that was rejected by Vanity Fair.

Résumé : "This recording was nominated for a Grammy in 1977, and it's easy to see why. . . Heston's experience is evident'rather than simply portraying the fisherman, he becomes the old man, Santiago."'Philadelphia InquirerErnest Hemingway took great pride in using an economy of carefully measured words and tightly wrought phrases in his writing. Nominated for a Grammy, this recording of The Old Man and the Sea is a perfect example of Hemingway's precision and is read here in its entirety by Oscar(R)-winning actor Charlton Heston.A novella, The Old Man and the Sea tells the story of an old fisherman, Santiago, and his long lusty struggle with a prized fish.
