Word grammar / Kensei Sugayama ; Richard A. Hudson
Titre : Word grammar : new perspectives on a theory of language structure / Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kensei Sugayama ; Richard A. Hudson Editeur : London : Continuum Année de publication : 2006 Importance : xviii, 232 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 0-8264-8645-2 Langues : Anglais Catégories : LITTERATURE ET LANGUE ANGLAISE:425 English grammar Mots-clés : Dependency grammar Grammar Comparative Grammar general Word order English language Semantics. Résumé : This book is an introduction to Word Grammar, a theory of language structure founded and developed by Dick Hudson. In this theory, language is a cognitive network - a network of concepts, words and meanings containing all the elements of a linguistic analysis. The theory of language is therefore embedded in a theory of knowledge, in which there are no boundaries between one form of knowledge and any other. The most controversial idea in Word Grammar syntax is that phrase structure is redundant, because all its work can be done by means of dependencies between individual words. Word-word dependency is therefore a key concept in Word Grammar, and the syntax and semantics of a sentence is built upon this foundation. Contributors to this volume are primarily Word Grammar grammarians from across the world. All the chapters here manifest theoretical potentialities of Word Grammar, exploring how powerful Word Grammar is to offer analysis for linguistic phenomena in various languages. The chapters come from varying perspectives and include work on a number of languages, including English, German, Japanese, Swahili, Turkish and Ancient Greek. Phenomena studied include verbal inflection, case agreement, extraction, construction and code-mixing. This collection will be of interest to academics encountering Word Grammar for the first time, or for those who are already familiar with this theory and are interested in reading how it has evolved and what its future may hold. Index. décimale : 415 Résumé : The present volume brings together various strands of research focusing on aspects of the syntax of agreement, and the role that agreement plays in linguistic theory. The essays collected here show how and why agreement has emerged in recent years as the central theoretical construct in minimalism. Although the theoretical context of the volume is minimalist in character, Boeckx attempts to formulate formal and substantive universals in the domain of agreement. Davis, Auteur ; Krisztina Zajdo, Auteur Editeur : New York : Lawrence Erlbaum Année de publication : 2008 Importance : 444 p. Présentation : ill. Langues : Anglais Catégories : LITTERATURE ET LANGUE ANGLAISE:420 Généralites et applications linguistiques Mots-clés : Grammar Comparative Grammar general Syllable Speech acts (Linguistics) Résumé : As a testament to the scope of Peter MacNeilage's scholarly work across his 40 year career, contributions to this tribute volume represent a broad spectrum of the seminal issues addressed by phonetic and evolutionary science over a number of years. Approaches to the problems raised by attempting to understand these fundamental topics are illustrated in the broad diversity of paradigms represented in the volume. This diversity in itself is a tribute to the breadth of scholarly questions pursued by MacNeilage across his career. Chapters are arranged around five thematic areas. Two themes, Evolutionary Perspectives on Speech Production and Acquisition of Speech, reflect the major thrust of Peter's scholarly career over the past 25 years. The other themes are reflective of the broad implications of MacNeilage's work for scholars in disparate scientific domains. One of the strengths of this volume is the unitary focus of contributions by scientists from diverse scientific backgrounds in considering the applicability of the Frame Content Theory within their own scholarly perspectives. Thematic strands in the volume include: - Evolutionary Perspectives on Speech Production - Neurobiological Aspects of Speech - Perception / Action Relationships - Acquisition of Speech Production Skill - Modeling and Movement - Alternative Perspectives on the Syllable. Présentation : ill. Format : 28 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-205-40287-8 Note générale : Includes transcription workbook (p. 317-412). Langues : Anglais Catégories : LITTERATURE ET LANGUE ANGLAISE:428 phonetique et linguistique Mots-clés : Phonetics Grammar Comparative Grammar general Phonology Résumé : Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology: From Concepts to Transcriptionprovides readers with a basic foundation in both phonetics and phonology. The book has two goals: (1) to connect phonetics and phonology into a conceptual unity and (2) to demonstrate the practical relevance of phonetics, phonology, and phonetic transcription for beginning students in communication disorders and related disciplines, such as linguistics or education. Written with an abundance of real-life examples, this first edition provides readers with a large base of information, from the basic definitions of phonetics and phonology to their practical, clinical applications when analyzing speech samples, demonstrating to future speech language practioners the interconnection between these two areas of of the field. The text's uniqueness lies in the continuous application of the presented information to practical examples, reinforcing to students the relevance of this knowledge to clinical practice while providing the instructor with practical examples which can be used to demonstrate basic principles. An important feature of this book is the inclusion of a phonetic transcription workbook. This workbook guides the student through a systematic learning process beginning with the identification of sounds within words, as opposed to letters, to transcribing multisyllabic words and short phrases. The process is a step-by-step one in which vowels and consonants are introduced in small groups, words are selected based on these sounds, followed by listening and transcription practice. Additional sounds are added systematically and each unit builds upon the next. The workbook will provide the student with many opportunities to learn phonetic transcription in an orderly process.
